Made in Cornwall

At Furniss, we’ve been crafting quality biscuits in Cornwall, using perfected recipes since 1886 – that’s why we have decided to join the Made in Cornwall scheme.

Cornwall is renowned for being a special place, rich in heritage with outstanding natural beauty. It is home to a vibrant business community, and has built a reputation for quality and excellence. The Made in Cornwall scheme showcases the very best of Cornish-made products.

Cornwall County Council’s Trading Standards Service launched the ‘Made in Cornwall’ scheme in 1991 to protect the identity of genuine Cornish products. It introduced the distinctive Engine House logo that members of the scheme can use on their products so that the public can buy in the knowledge that what they are purchasing is indeed, Made in Cornwall.

We’re proud of our Cornish heritage, proud to produce our products in the heart of Cornwall and proud to be part of the Made in Cornwall scheme – Cornwall is where our heart is.

A delightful new range

We’re extremely excited to launch our fabulous new “Delights” range into the biscuit market. The range is available in both skillet and drum format, perfect for the every-day eat occasion or as a beautiful gift. The bold and modern packaging, specifically designed to stand out on the shelf, has been illustrated by our in-house graphic designer to represent each tasty flavour.

The flavours include a chocolate chip oat crunchie, a blossom honey oat crunchie – which are both palm oil free – Sicilian lemon crisp and a dark chocolate chip ginger.

We love creating new and exceptional biscuits, just as our founder John Cooper Furniss, did back in 1886. His passion for using only the best ingredients, sourced locally where possible, and exacting attention to detail quickly secured Furniss a reputation for serving the tastiest biscuits in town. Our talented development chef has created this beautiful biscuit range to incorporate modern trends, to the same exacting high quality that Furniss has become renowned for.

Today, we bake as we have always done: in Cornwall, driven by the history of John Cooper Furniss and his passion for creating the best products possible.

We’re delighted to have retained our Gold Healthy Workplace Award.

The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly workplace Health Award is a county standard of good practice and a quality mark of health and wellbeing in the workplace. The aim of the award is to act as a toolkit to encourage employers to think about ways to improve the health and wellbeing of their employees. The health and wellbeing of all 240 colleagues here at Proper Cornish and Furniss is so important to us, and it’s fantastic to have recognition for the work undertaken over the last two years with many more plans in the future.

We will continue to put staff wellbeing as a key strategic objective, and understand the importance of health in the relation to happiness, productivity and engagement.

Have you got the bottle?

As part of our commitment to health, wellbeing and the environment, we have joined the Refill Cornwall campaign, whereby members of the public can call into Reception at Proper Cornish or Furniss to refill their water bottles with tap water. Currently less than 30% of people in the UK drink tap water in a reusable bottle, despite the fact we are lucky to have some of the best quality, free drinking water in the world. Refill makes refilling a reusable water bottle easy and more socially acceptable than buying a single-use plastic drinks bottle. If just one in ten Brits refilled once a week, we’d have 340 million less plastic bottles in circulation and help to prevent the plastic pollution from entering our rivers and seas. We are committed to reducing the use of single use plastics, so we are delighted to have signed up for this scheme. We now appear on Refill Cornwall’s website, and stickers are displayed in our windows to promote that we are a Refill Cornwall Centre.

Colleague Charity – 2019

We are delighted to announce that our colleague charity for 2019 is The Hugs Foundation.  A fantastic new equine rescue charity based in Bodmin, servicing the whole of Cornwall, they are working to not only provide a rescue and rehabilitation centre for horses, ponies and other animals, but also to offer counselling and equine/animal therapy to vulnerable adults, young people and to those suffering from poor mental health.   We are looking forward to working with this fabulous charity in 2019.  Follow the link to learn more about the wonderful work they do.
