The story of Furniss...

Furniss of Cornwall is a proud old Cornish company.  It began in Truro in the 1880s, when a master baker named John Cooper Furniss began producing Fairings, gingerbreads and other fine confectionery from a Truro teashop.

In the early 1880s the Royal Cornwall Gazette reported on a high profile society wedding for which John Cooper Furniss was commissioned to make the Wedding cake.

In 1988 the company moved to a modern factory in Redruth, Cornwall where some of our traditional biscuits are still made to the original recipes.

Furniss is an iconic Cornish brand and is much loved by the Cornish and people the world over. However, in 2006 commercial pressures in the increasingly aggressive biscuit market meant that the manufacturer of Furniss struggled to compete against the bigger players. The business quickly went into administration and desperately needed a saviour.

Relief for Furniss was soon found and the fortune of the famous biscuit brand was reversed. As a local family business, Proper Cornish Food Company heard of the company's plight and stepped in to save iconic Furniss treats from disappearing from our biscuit tins forever.

At Proper Cornish Food Company, we greatly respect the important role Furniss has played in shaping and promoting the quality of Cornish food and believe passionately that this much loved classic should be safe guarded for future generations to enjoy.  We are proud to be able to continue to produce Furniss biscuits for the public and look forward to building on the traditions of Cornwall's original best loved biscuits.

Proper Cornish Food Company has ensured that many of the original Furniss and Cornish Fairing recipes are still being used to produce biscuits with the same love and care as John Cooper Furniss did himself.
