Cornish Biscuits Crowned Top in Food Excellence Awards
07 July 2008
Redruth-based premium biscuit manufacturer Furniss of Cornwall is celebrating this week with news that one of its biscuit flavours, produced for Budgens, has been crowned best ‘Snacks and Treats: Sweet' in The Grocer magazine's Own Label Excellence Awards 2008.
The Oat, Cranberry and Almond biscuits were named category winner in the respected industry magazine awards, competing against own label products from the likes of Sainsbury's and Morrison's. One of a five-strong selection of Furniss-made biscuits, the Oat, Cranberry and Almond biscuits were introduced to Budgens', premium own label ‘Our Kitchen' range in October 2007 and are now on sale in over 200 Budgens stores across Great Britain.
Mark Muncey, marketing manager at Furniss of Cornwall, said: "We are absolutely delighted that the Budgens Our Kitchen range has been recognised with such a prestigious award, which is testament to the quality range of biscuits and flavours that Furniss produces for the own label market.
We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Musgrave Retail Partners GB to produce an innovative range of biscuit flavours which are filled with the real taste of the best natural ingredients, and are free from artificial colours, flavourings and hydrogenated fat. Particular thanks go to Annette Pearce, one of our New Product Development team at Furniss, for developing the products and David Roberts, the Budgens account manager, for building a successful relationship."
Now in its third year, The Grocer Own Label Excellence Awards are designed to recognise the trendsetters and innovators that raise the bar of own-label quality and value. The success of the Budgens ‘Our Kitchen' range is an example of the continuing strength of Furniss of Cornwall products following the brand's acquisition by Proper Cornish Food Company in 2006.

Notes to Editors:
Furniss of Cornwall is a proud, old Cornish company which began in the 1880's when master baker, John Cooper Furniss began producing Fairings, gingerbread and other fine confectionary from his Truro teashop
In 1988, this much loved biscuit brand moved its premises to Redruth, Cornwall where it remains today, producing delicious biscuits, some of which are still made to the original recipes
In 2006, the iconic biscuit company was acquired by Proper Cornish Food Company. Since then the company has gone from strength to strength, selling to customers across the UK and overseas
Following the successful re-launch of the brand in 2006, Furniss of Cornwall recently launched a new interactive consumer website www.furniss-foods.co.uk to increase awareness of the biscuit brand and provide the growing number of Furniss fans with greater insight into the history of the origins of Fairing biscuits, as well as access to recipes and the latest news.
